The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) is a national trade association representing the leading innovative biopharmaceutical research and biotechnology companies in America.
Our members are committed to discovering tomorrow’s cures and treatments for some of the most serious diseases. PhRMA members have invested nearly half a trillion dollars in research and development, including $51 billion in 2013.
Investment in research and development means advances in the treatment of disease, with more compounds currently being studied in the United States than in any other country. In the last year, more than forty medicines were approved by the Food and Drug Administration, many of which are first in class.
We encourage National Hispanic Nurses Association members to take advantage of PhRMA’s research and health care resources. For example, PhRMA’s From Hope to Cures campaign (www.fromhopetocures.org) shares stories of patients who have overcome rare, debilitating and chronic diseases, and elevates the discussion of the value of innovation and new medicine development. The campaign uses the themes HOPE, POSSIBLE, CURABLE and POWER to highlight patients from all walks of life benefiting from biopharmaceutical research and innovation, including: Matt, an adult six-year lung cancer survivor; Nicholas, a young child fighting acute lymphoblastic leukemia; and Hydeia, who is 30 years old and has been battling HIV/AIDS since she was three years old. The campaign also features researchers like Janet who wake up every day trying to beat the odds and develop new treatments and cures for patients.
Health care coverage can be complicated and overwhelming. To help educate consumers on insurance coverage, PhRMA created Access Better Coverage (www.accessbettercoverage.org) – a website with resources and whiteboard videos to help consumers understand how coverage works and questions to ask when shopping for health insurance. By breaking down the coverage process, and providing insight into how accessing different services – like prescription medicines – works, Access Better Coverage offers simple yet effective tools for consumers making decisions about their coverage.
PhRMA members are leading the way in the search for new medicines and cures. PhRMA values its relationship with the National Hispanic Nurses Association and looks forward to continued partnership.
