2016 NAHN Vote

Candidate for 2016-2018 Nominating Committee:

Susan Caplan, PhD, APRN-BC

Relevant NAHN Experience:

Although I am relatively new to NAHN, I am seeking a position on the nominating committee to continue my service to the Hispanic nursing community. Recently I served for two years, the duration of the program, as a primary and secondary mentor for the Student Mentorship Program for Hispanic Health Research (sMPH2r) sponsored by the Hispanic-Serving Health Professionals Schools. This program was the first formal web and team based national mentorship program focusing on Hispanic health research. The group we established continues to collaborate on the creation of a manuscript based on my research pertaining to depression among Latino immigrants.

Platform Statement

As an Assistant Professor at Rutgers School of Nursing, clinical researcher and primary care provider, I have been working with Latino immigrants and nursing students in the Northeast for the past two decades. My current research, "El Buen Consejo,"is an interventional study to improve mental health literacy and treatment engagement among Latinos in the faith-based setting. At an international level, I am the PI of two mental health research studies in the Dominican Republic, funded by the Center for International Advancement and Global Affairs, International Collaborative Research (GAIA) and Sigma Theta Tau International. I continually mentor Hispanic nursing students in research and seek to actively engage them in furthering their nursing education and potential research careers. I look forward to serving NAHN.
