National Association of Hispanic Nurses Awards
$5,000 in Scholarships

Washington, DC (August 12, 2011) — The National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN) recently recognized five outstanding nursing students at its Annual Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. The scholarships, supported by a contribution from Lilly USA, LLC, were granted to students enrolled in an associate, baccalaureate or graduate nursing program. Each will receive a $1,000 Scholarship.

As the Hispanic population increases in the United States, the need for bilingual/bicultural Hispanic nurses rises.  Of the more than three million registered nurses in the United States, only about 110,000 – or two percent – are Hispanic.

“We believe it is critical for health care providers to reflect the various populations they serve. Therefore, we are proud to support this scholarship which will encourage more Hispanic students to choose a nursing career," said Shaun Hawkins, Chief Diversity Officer at Eli Lilly.

The following students were selected based on their outstanding academic achievements and commitment to the Hispanic community:

  • Iliana Andrade of California
  • Christina Hernandez, MSN, RN of North Carolina
  • Ana Lugo of Michigan
  • Christina Nava-Gomez, Texas
  • Julia Rivera of Arizona

“These students are all devoted to their studies and to their communities and as nurses will surely be an asset to the Hispanic community.” said NAHN President Angie Millan, RN, MSN, NP, CNS
